Homemade Beef Rendang

Beef Rendang is a meat dish which originated from West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is served at ceremonial occasions and to honor guests. Although culinary experts often describe it as a curry, rendang is usually not considered as such in Indonesia since it is richer and contains less liquid than is normal for Indonesian curries. In 2011 an online poll of 35,000 people by CNN International chose rendang as the number one dish of their “World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods (Readers’ Pick)” list.
Typically, meat is cooked in a mixture of spices then simmered in coconut milk. Ingredients used in the spice mixture, or rempah, are usually garlic, onion, red chilies, turmeric, ginger, pepper, lemongrass, galangal, star anise, kaffir lime leaves, bay leaves and turmeric leaves among other spices.

There are three stages of cooking rendang. It starts as gulai, a wet gravy. With further cooking, the gravy reduces to what is referred to as kalio. Finally, the meat is cooked until it absorbs all the gravy. This dark oak, dry beef rendang takes hours to create but is so delicious; your pallets will want it over and over again. We invested the time to cook it, you just enjoy it!
The cooking process over low heat serves to add flavor to the meat, tenderize and preserve it.

Panglao Day Tour

The Panglao Day Tour has many interesting features, from culture to nature and back. Many reasons to book this amazing tour.

During the Panglao Day Tour you will visit the church “Miracle Water” or “Our Lady of the Assumption“, which is the official name of the church. The present church (The 5th on this place) is founded by Fr. Diego de Ayala and Fr. Joseph Gregorio of the Jesuit order in 1863. The church was built in a variety of styles, influenced by Neo-Gothic and Neo-Classic architecture. On the ceiling inside the church are wonderful paintings made by Ray Francia and Canuto Avila in 1916. It was only in 1970 where Lito Arraya renovated the building.

Hinagdanan Cave is one of the other stops during your Panglao Day Tour.

Hinagdanan Cave is one the most interesting place in Panglao Island. Hinagdanan Cave is a small grotto with beautiful rock formations and a crystal clear underground lake surrounded by Stalactites and stalagmites. There are stairs from the entrance, so it is very easy to go inside the cave although the floor can be slippery.

The underground lake is very popular for swimming in its 25 degree Celcius water (same temperature of the Mag Aso Falls pool), however you have to pay PhP 100 extra for this refreshing pleasure.

Next to the lake, Hinagdanan Cave has some interesting features. There is natural light inside the cave due to numerous holes in the ceiling. The cave is also a favorite nesting place for swallows. That is the reason that the entrance door is closed with a mesh, for visitor’s safety. When you are in the cave, make sure you do some exploration. Not many visitors do that, so you have a good chance to do this undisturbed.

One of the most spectacular places you will visit during your Panglao Day Tour is the Shell Museum. All the shells you will find inside the museum is owned and collected over a period more than 30 years by Mr. Quirino Hora. In fact, there are already two sea shells named after him. The first shell, named Bursa Quirihorai, was discovered in 1987 and the second was in 1994, named Primovula Horai and both these shells were discovered in Panglao.

The Shell Museum has one of the biggest shell collections is the world and contains many very rare and valuable shells (what to think of a 7mm large shell that can easily be sold for more than $1,000?).

Panglao Church (The church of St. Augustine) stands on the southwestern side of Panglao Island with its back towards the sea and is the second church you visit on your Panglao Day Tour. In addition to the massive stone church which is clearly of Spanish-time vintage, you can see, across the spacious plaza, other landmarks of Spain’s occupation: the watch tower, said to be the tallest of its kind in the Philippines( (where the largest one can be found in Maribojoc, Bohol) and the old municipal building and school houses made of huge stone blocks.
The construction of this church is a story on its own. Rev. Fr. Valentin Utande, a Recollect, started building this church in 1894 up to 1897 when he was transferred to another parish. Two other Spanish priests, Rev. Fr. Eugenio Gil and Rev. Fr. Pedro Jimenez continued the construction slowly until 1898 when the Filipino revolution against Spanish authority broke out. The construction was abandoned as there were no more Spanish priests assigned in Panglao.

In 1912, Rev. Fr. Emiliano Veloso was assigned parish priest and he continued the construction with the whole-hearted cooperation of the church leaders, town officials, and residents of Panglao. A greater part of the nave was done in 1920, and by 1924, even if still unfinished, a 4-day inauguration affair was scheduled, with Bishop Juan B. Gorordo of Cebu celebrating the Inaugural Mass and Blessing on Sunday, August 31, 1924.

Mag Aso Falls

Tha Mag Aso Falls might not be the largest waterfall on Bohol with its 25 foot (8 meter) height but it has one of the nicest swimming areas.

Mag Aso Falls, with its turquoise water and tropical flora and fauna, looks like a lost paradise. The only thing you hear is the roaring water and birds. Mag Aso Falls is still not in the list of the Bohol tourist attractions, so you have a good chance to be there alone when you go on weekdays. In the weekends local people love to hang out there and have a swim in the cool, crystal clear water.

After your visit to Mag Aso Falls you will visit a local handicraft store in Antequera, a village know for its beautiful products made from local natural materials.

Hiking and Bird Watching

Hiking and Bird Watching at Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape, a protected landscape area of forested limestone hills, grasslands and natural springs

Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape is the largest remaining tract of natural forest in Bohol and one of the Philippines’ top hiking and bird watching sites.
The park has more than 30 kilometers of marked trails for wildlife observation, over 100 caves, a camping area and a swimming pool. At the summit of Bilar Peak, an observation tower has been constructed providing panoramic views of the park and surrounding countryside, including the nearby island of Panglao and even Cebu. Near the park’s entrance is a tunnel that leads to Magsaysay Park, a cleared area situated next to a ranger station and the Logarita spring.

The Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape is an important hiking and bird watching area being home to over 120 bird species, many of which are endemic to the Philippines. The park also supports six species of large mammals namely, the Philippine tarsier, long-tailed macaque, Philippine flying lemur, Malayan civet, Asian palm civet, various monitor lizards and Philippine warty pig. It is also a habitat of some rodent species, such as the Philippine forest rat, rice-field rat and Mindanao hairy-tailed rat. The more than 100 caves also hold several species of bats and swiftlets.

You will follow a hiking trail with a professional guide from the park which leads you along the most interesting points of the park. Your guide will try to find you some of the animals who live in the forest, it’s nature though… there is no guarantee that you see everything.

Duration: 5-6 hours
Prices: Php 4,000/vehicle
Entrance fees/Guide: PhP 500/person

Dolphin Watching

Have you ever seen dolphins in the wild? No? Let’s go Dolphin Watching!

The Dolphin Watching tour a road/boat trip to Balicasag Island. You will go by car to Panglao where you will board a Bangka (local outrigger boat) and set sail to Balicasag Isand. Your captain and crew know exactly where so search for the dolphins while they are on their daily trip to their feeding ground. With some luck your boat will be surrounded by playful dolphins, jumping out of the water to chase the fish. It is great to see how dolphins hunt in pacts, where one pact chases the fish and the other is patiently waiting for the fish t practically swim into their mouth.

This Dolphin Watching tour is a wonderful experience for young and old.

The Dolphin Watching tour starts at Isla Hayahay Beach Resort & Restaurant already at 4am. Because the kitchen is still closed at this time of the day we will provide your breakfast on Balicasag Island. You will be back in the resort around lunch-time, giving you the opportunity to relax after lunch.

Island Hopping

“because the surface of the ocean is the beginning of the sky”

The Island Hopping tour is the second most searched for activity, right after the Countryside Tour.

During the Island Hopping tour, which takes most of the day, you visit 2 islands, a sand bar and you will have a nice lunch (at additional costs) on the beach (when the tides allow it) or on the boat.

Start of the tour is from the resort where the boat will pick you up around 8:30am and you set sail to the first island of your Island Hopping tour.

You will visit a fisherman’s village on Mantatao Island. We couldn’t describe the experience you are about encounter better as one of our previous guests did:

“Mantatao Island; a small, unpretentious place whose livelihood is dependent on fishing. As is usual when wandering through seldom visited places, children were shy at first, hiding behind doorways and peering through glassless apertures that served as windows; but the longer I loitered on the narrow sandy streets, the more children tentatively approached me. After ten minutes I was surrounded by almost two dozen curious boys and girls and I felt like a modern Pied Piper of Hamlin when leading this small band of followers on a stroll through Mantatao.

I was struck by the cheerfulness that these children held from the simplest of pleasures – whether that be the smile of a stranger or in the case of one boy – the joy in dragging a miniature model of a fishing boat along the ground. No electronic games, bicycles or other sophisticated toys are found here, yet the delight of these children demonstrates that one needs not to surround themselves with the latest gadgets or toys to be happy.”

The potential more “wet” part of your Island Hopping tour will be at Dumog Sandbar, a small sandbar which is only a small part of a very long uplift from the sea. A large table coral formation and a nearby gentle drop off will be visited off the sandbar if you’re up to some swimming and snorkeling and on the way back you will stop at a beautiful snorkeling spot at Pangangan Island.

You will have your lunch (when we ca be there at low tide) at Dumog Sandbar. When nature times low tide completely wrong you will have lunch on the boat.

Around 4pm you will arrive back at the resort.

Duration: 5-6 hours
Prices: PhP 3,700/boat
Rent of mask/snorkel: Php150/person/day

Lunch is not included and would have to be ordered / paid separately

Guided Kayaking

Guided Kayaking is a great idea when you want to go into the Mangroves that surround Pangangan Island. The Mangroves around Pangangan Island are around 54 hectares and growing. When you go into this Mangrove forest it is not so difficult to get lost. With the Guided Kayaking tour we provide a guide who knows the way in this living maze.

When you just want to do some kayaking in open water you can, of course, opt for just the Kayak rental and sail you own way.

Countryside Tour

During the Countryside Tour you will visit all the
“must see while on Bohol” attractions.

countryside tour

Your countryside tour would not be complete without a visit to the world famous Chocolate Hills.

There are at least 1,260 hills but there may be as many as 1,776 hills spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers (20 sq mi). They are covered in green grass that turns brown (like chocolate) during the dry season, hence the name.

There are some legends explaining the formation of the Chocolate Hills. The most romantic legend tells of a giant named Arogo who was extremely powerful and youthful. Arogo fell in love with Aloya, who was a simple mortal. Aloya’s death caused Arogo much pain and misery, and in his sorrow he could not stop crying. When his tears dried, the Chocolate Hills were formed.

You will be visiting the Official Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella, run by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation as part of your countryside tour. Why the Official Sanctuary? Your visit will help financing their research and conservation of these endangered creatures instead of making some people rich by keeping Tarsiers captive under terrible circumstances.
You will be able to see these amazing tiny primates and even take pictures (without flash).

The Sandugo was a blood compact, performed in the island of Bohol in the Philippines, between the Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna the chieftain of Bohol on March 16, 1565, to seal their friendship as part of the tribal tradition. This is considered as the first treaty of friendship between the Spaniards and Filipinos. “Sandugo” is a Visayan word which means “one blood”.

The Sandugo is depicted in both the provincial flag and the official seal of the government in Bohol. It also features the image of the blood compact. The top of the seal explains the history behind the Sandugo event that occurred in Bohol, the fleet and the location where the Spaniards anchored and the place where the treaty was conducted which was dated on March 16, 1565.

A river cruise on a floating restaurant is the main activity that the Loboc River offers, attracting both local and foreign tourists. The river cruises start in the Town of Loboc and travel upstream to the Busay Falls. Because of its clean, green and peaceful river environment along with the local food served, the place is now widely known across the country, don’t leave this out of your countryside tour!

Stretching up to two kilometers, the dense Bilar Man-made Forest made up of red and white mahogany trees is located along the border of Loboc and Bilar towns.

As you leave Loboc town up the winding hilly road going to Chocolate Hills, you will notice immediately that you are now inside the forest because your view of the road and surroundings darken and you feel chilly, especially during summer months.

Bilar man-made forest was part of a bigger reforestation project that was created in response to the alarming deforestation in the Loboc watershed. This was caused by the destructive slash and burn farming system called kaingin, which was done by the locals who sought refuge in the forested area during World War II. The other part of the reforestation project became the Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape (previously Rajah Sikatuna National Park). Both protected areas are managed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

La Purisima Concepcion de la Virgen Maria Parish Church (also The Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary Parish Church), commonly known as Baclayon Church, is a Roman Catholic Church in the municipality of Baclayon, Bohol, Philippines within the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tagbilaran. Baclayon was founded by the Jesuit priest Juan de Torres and Gabriel Sánchez in 1596, and became the oldest Christian settlement in Bohol. It was elevated as a parish in 1717 and the present coral stone church was completed in 1737. The Augustinian Recollects succeeded the Jesuits in 1768 and heavily renovated the church since then
When a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Bohol and other parts of Central Visayas in 2013, the church building sustained major damage. Reconstruction by the National Museum of the Philippines started in 2013, and was completed in 2017

You want to finish your countryside tour with a visit to one of the local markets. Just like any other public market in the country, you can find nearly anything at the Bohol local Markets, including meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits and grains, among others. According to the market administrators, it is one of the best places to source out vegetables since a good number of traders deliver their produce there. These vegetable suppliers come from Cebu and Mindanao, specifically from Cagayan de Oro City. The prices of the goods at the market are around 50% cheaper and much fresher compared to the ones sold in supermarkets and groceries in the city.

How to get here

Pangangan Island is connected to Bohol with the longest man-made causeway of the Philippines (marked RED on the map above). This makes it very convenient to travel to the island because you don’t need a boat to get there, you just drive there.

From Manilla:

From Manilla you will fly to Tagbilaran, the Capital of Bohol. From Tagbilaran airport it is a 1 – 4 hour drive to our resort, depending on the kind of transport you choose*.

From Cebu

From Cebu you want to take a ferry to Tubigon. There are some different companies who provide ferry transfer to Tubigon but we advise to use StarCraft or Fast Cat.
When you walk out of the airport go to your right and walk along the airport building. Next to the building you will find the taxis who can bring you to Pier 3 where the ferries leave. You best ignore all the people who come to you with private transport offers, the taxis are metered and just as comfortable.
Ask the driver to buy your tickets… you need to buy them before you go to the terminal and the “ticket offices” are pretty hard to find, They are mainly just a hole in a wall.

When you arrive in Tubigon it is a 20 minutes – 1 hour drive to the resort, depending on the kind of transport you choose*.

*Transport on Land

To travel from Tagbilaran Airport or Port and from Tubigon Port to our resort you have several options.
Of course the easiest and most comfortable way is to let us organize the transfer for you. Our driver will be waiting for you with a luxurious air conditioned car or van and  and safely drives you to the resort.

If you choose to travel with public transport please read our recommendations below.

transfer

*Public Transport

Public transport options in the Philippines are: Minivan, Bus, Jeepney or Tricycle. Of course they have different prices, pro’s and con’s.
The white minivans probably the fastest but also the most dangerous option, they drive 90-110 kilometers an hour on roads you would want to drive 50-60 km/h and therefore regularly crash…therefore we don’t really want to recommend this way of transport to you.Travel time: from Tagbilaran around 1 hour 20 minutes; from Tubigon 30-45 minutes.
A much safer option are the yellow buses. They go at a much safer speed but stop randomly to take new passengers in. Travel time: from Tagbilaran around 2 1/2 hours; from Tubigon around 1 hour.
If you are up to an adventure you can take a Jeepney. It will take a long time to reach your destination and you will have to change Jeepneys a few times but you experienced real Filipino transport! Travel time: from Tagbilaran around 4 hours; from Tubigon around 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Last option would be to take a tricycle. This is the least comfortable way of traveling when you are over 1.5 meter tall. Travel time: from Tagbilaran around 4 hours; from Tubigon around 1 hour.

Pangangan Island

Isla Hayahay Beach Resort & Restaurant is located on Pangangan Island, a small island of the coast of Calape, Bohol.

Pangangan was previously called “Panggawan” derived from the word “panggaw”.

PANGGAWAN is a kind of fish trap used by some of the local fishermen to catch fish. This kind of fishing was very popular within Pangangan Island in the old days.

The word “PANGGAWAN” changed to “Pangangan” and it is now the official name of this island.

isla hayahay in lomboy

Pangangan Island has eight Barangays (suburbs) namely; Lawis, Talisay, Kinabag-an, Magtongtong, Madangog, Looc, Lomboy, and Kahayag. Isla Hayahay Beach Resort & Restaurant is located in Barangay Lomboy.

The causeway that connects Pangangan Island with the main land (Bohol) was completely constructed by locals, without involving any engineering construction practices, after WWII, and is believed to be the longest causeway in the Philippines.

The causeway was completed in the 1950s and, for the first time, the residents of Pangangan enjoyed the convenience of road travel. But not for long. Barely two feet above water during high tide, the coral-and-limestone causeway was easily damaged by strong waves and typhoons, so it was often impassable, until two men found a solution.

Felipe Josol Ytac Sr. was the principal of Pangangan Elementary and High School when he and some student volunteers began planting hundreds of mangrove propagules at the approach of the causeway on Pangangan in the late 1950s .

This small beginning was enough to inspire Anastacio Toloy, who took over Ytac’s post in 1961, to continue the project. Toloy rallied his male students, most of them Boy Scouts, from the third grade to high school to plant mangroves along the causeway, while the girls were assigned to collect 100 propagules each at a nearby natural strand at the south side of the causeway.

Soon, mangrove planting became an annual event for Toloy and his students, who religiously planted more propagules, usually during the “Scouting Month” of October. Heartened by their initial success, the rest of the community started to pitch in, making the planting a regular feature of their weekend picnics. Learning from experience, they began planting the propagules at a much closer spacing than the usual 1 meter which resulted in higher mortality and branchy trees. Such close spacing allowed the young trees to protect each other from strong waves and also enhanced height growth. The mangroves flourished and, by 1982, the plantation covered a total area of 6 hectares stretching to 2.5 km toward the mainland. Pangangan Island today is protected by a mangrove plantation that spreads to a total area of about 54 hectares.

  • This was the final stop
on our months adventure through the Phillipines and we wish we had come
sooner. The staff are so welcoming and kind, the food is amazing (highly
recommend the Rendang). The calmeness and seclusion is just lovely,
like being in your own private paradise. The rooms are very spacious and
clean. Plus the price for this place makes it even better super cheap
for what you get! Of your looking for some peace and quiet this is the
    place for you.Tia B.
  • I love this place and wish I could have stayed
there for my whole trip. Comfy beds, huge shower, beautiful beach and a
great bar! Hope to be back soonNatalie Sargent
  • From the moment you
arrive there is a “hayahay” (relaxed) feeling. The staff is very
welcoming and help you. The food is excellent and the location is very
beautifull. Consider the reasonable pricing and this is a location to
    return to.

    Stefan F.

  • Very homey and peaceful. Affordable, too. The
staff were hospitable and willing to assist anytime. There was a
black-out in the whole of Bohol when we went there and Isla Hayahay was
true to its name– hayahay. We appreciate their efforts in making our
stay as comfortable as possible amidst the lack of electricity. Will
definitely recommend this to friends going to Calape, Bohol.Joanne Charisse Quinawod-Comayao
